"Florilegium" Artist Trading Cards
Waterjet cut, spray painted, and laser engraved markable aluminum cards
November 2022

A set of eighteen artist trading cards depicting fictional plants from various media. The illustrations for the card fronts were inked, then scanned and edited to be laser engraved onto laser-markable aluminum. The cards themselves were cut from a sheet of aluminum using a Wazer waterjet cutter. For the backs, I spray painted the cards matte black and then engraved away short descriptions of the plants that I wrote.

The front of the boxes I designed for the full set. Laser cut and engraved masonite and birchwood.

Athelas - The Lord of the Rings
The Elves and the Rangers of the North know athelas as a potent healing herb, though the other races of Middle Earth think it a useless weed. Also known as Kingsfoil, folk tales tell of its increased potency when used by a descendant of the Kings of Men.

Simbelmyne - The Lord of the Rings
These small white flowers grow only atop graves and tombs. Their name translates to "evermind," evoking their year-round bloom and the remembrance of those whose resting places they grow upon. They hold special significance in the kingdom of Rohan, where they grow abundantly over the graves of past kings.

Urdrupe - The Dark Crystal
These little red berries grow only in the Crystal Desert and cause powerful hallucinations, allowing those who consume them to speak to Thra and catch glimpses of the future. One such hallucination revealed that a Gelfling would end the evil Skeksis' rule over Thra, leading the Skeksis to commit genocide against them.

Samus Eater - Metroid
These carnivorous plants grow on planet Zebes in the swampy, red-soiled underground caverns of Lower Brinstar. They grow large enough to consume unlucky adventurers who happen upon them with ease. Sometimes insect-like creatures like Zebbos and Yapping Maws will live inside of them, suggesting symbiotic relationships between the species.

Nether Wart - Minecraft
Native to the Nether, this red fungus grows atop soul sand, which is said to contain the souls of the damned. Perhaps the souls imbue nether wart with a special power, as it is an integral ingredient in all potions. It is only found growing in ancient fortresses and bastions.

Chorus Fruit - Minecraft
These purple fruits are native to the barren highlands of the outer End islands and have several uses. When eaten, the consumer will teleport a few feet and suffer harm because of it. If cooked, the fruit will pop and can then be made into purpur, a building material.

Apricorn - Pokemon
Before modern Poke Balls were invented, people caught pokemon with the hollowed-out shells of Apricorns. In ancient times there was only one variety, the brown Apricorn, but nowadays they come in a plethora of different colors, each with its own quirks and effects when made into a Poke Ball.

Silent Princess - The Legend of Zelda
This rare, endangered flower was once thought to have gone extinct. It thrives in the wilderness, and cannot be cultivated by people. Legend says that if a couple swears their love on one, they will live a charmed life together. Supposedly it's one of the princess of Hyrule's favorite flowers.

Gysahl Greens - Final Fantasy
Gysahl Greens are a chocobo's favorite food. Chocobos are large, flightless birds that are sough after as steeds. Travelers use Gysahl Greens to attract wild chocobos to ride, and farmers use them to feed their chocobo. They're also a good medicinal herb for humans, though they taste a bit bitter.

Sweet Gem Berry - Stardew Valley
Grown in autumn from rare seeds, sweet gem plants take almost the whole season to grow, producing a single berry at harvest. The berry is said to have the sweetest taste in the world. It'll fetch a pretty penny when sold, but some would trade priceless treasures for a taste...

Ancient Fruit - Stardew Valley
A fruit from a prehistoric plant long thought to be extinct. Their dormant seeds can be found throughout Stardew Valley. After reviving a dormant seed, ancient plants take an entire season to grow, but produce a fruit every week until they die from cold weather or lack of water.

Fygg - Dragon Quest IX
The golden fruit of Yggdrasil the World Tree, grown from the gratitude of mortalkind. It grants a single wish when eaten, but often does so by creating a monstrous reflection of the wisher's desires. Only those with the purest of hearts seem to get their wishes realized without devastating consequences.

Bodura Grass - Dragon Quest IX
A miraculous grass that grows deep under Mt. Ulbaruun in the ruined citadel of Gerzuun. Juice made from bodura grass has the power to reveal the true form of a disguised monster. Monsters also avoid where it grows, which kept some citizens of Gerzuun safe when their city was overrun.

Nightlock - The Hunger Games
The small purple berries of this plant are often mistaken to be edible, an oversight with deadly consequences. Nightlock berries are extremely poisonous and will quickly kill a person when eaten. They are native to Districts 12 and 13 of Panem, but are sometimes grown in the Hunger Games arenas.

Gum-Gum Fruit - One Piece
The Gum-Gum fruit is one kind of Devil Fruit, all of which grant supernatural powers when eaten. The Gum-Gum fruit gives one's body the properties of rubber, allowing it to stretch incredible distances. This power, however, comes at a price: like all Devil Fruit, it permanently renders one unable to swim.

Atokirina' - Avatar
Seeds of the Tree of Souls, Atokirina' are extremely sacred to the Na'vi, the native people of Pandora. They are considered omens from Eywa, the All-Mother, and often congregate in places of spiritual importance. Certain Na'vi clans bury their dead with an Atokirina' to ensure their spirit's return to Eywa.

Fricai Andlat - The Inheritance Cycle
This brightly-colored mushroom holds within it an interesting duality: one bite of its electric blue stalk is a death sentence, but its black cap can cure most poisons. In fact, Tunivor's Nectar, the remedy for the magic-suppressing poison Skilna Bragh, is derived from the cap of Fricai Andlat.

Seithr Plant - The Inheritance Cycle
Oil from this plant's petals is usually used to preserve pearls. However, with a blood sacrifice and a certain incantation, seithr oil becomes a deadly, corrosive poison, destroying any organic matter it touches. It has no effect on non-living things, making it a favorite tool of Alagaesia's supernatural spies and assassins.
